Located not very far from the Vientiane capital city of Laos, Xieng Khuan (Buddha Park) is a very unique ritual place not only in the country but also in the Southeast Asia. The holy garden will surely give tourist indescribable feelings in the middle of spiritual atmosphere.

In 1958, a man named Bounlua Suliat located the park in the Mekong River bank with the aim of producing a Buddhist characteristic space. Listed as one of noticeable destinations in every Laos tour, this place is well-known for its countless Buddha statues expressed in different faces and postures. All of these figurines are carved entirely in cement materials. For this substance, throughout 5 decades, these statues have been coated a green moss jacket. The weather cloak seemingly makes changes for every faces of the parkland. Besides Buddha idols, several of pictographic sculptures in shape of sacred relics, demons or humans are sophisticatedly presented.

Inside, there are three separate storeys of Hell, Earth and Heaven containing sculptures in accordance with respective theme. After climbing to the top, you can feast your eyes on the charming peace as well as magical charisma of statue from above. The 120-metre-long reclining Buddha is much more beautiful to visualize from this point.

These artworks had been completed during 50s 60s in the 20th century - the fiercest war time in Indochina. The father of this magnificent park, Mr. Bounlua had a really good command of Hindu philosophy, Buddhism, mythology as well symbolism. Although he had not been properly trained, his sculptures had successfully conveyed the images he saw in his dreams, in the sense of divinity that he realized through the daily life. Also for this reason, this works of art vividly described the interference of diverse culture in the country under ones religious belief. Furthermore, stories narrated by carvings are truly attracting many visitors.

There are various religious places in Laos, but the solemn, sacred garden is truly a place to be. You can totally put your mind at ease when strolling around the place, especially on bare foot. Travelling Indochina, visitors should not miss this Buddha Park on their Laos holidays.
